Rollers
come in different sizes, materials, and "depths".
Once again, there are major differences in qualities: if you
plan on keeping your roller for more than one usage, the choice
of handle and "cage" can be a crucial one. The actual
"sleeve" may be re-used only if a great deal of
care and time is spent in the cleaning process. Most people
opt for a high quality handle and disposable "sleeves".
"Depth
of Nap"
(This
is the thickness of the "fur" or sponge, and must
be chosen carefully to get the right effect. Different paints
require different depths.)
- 5 mm
For smooth surfaces, such as ceilings
- 10
mm For surfaces with a slight texture
- 20
mm For rough surfaces (e.g. concrete block)
- 50
mm For extremely rough textures
Trays:
Made
of metal or plastic, a good tray is a wise investment, and
should last through many jobs. Additionally, one may purchase
a disposable tray, which fits inside the permanent one. This
makes cleanup very easy indeed!
Using
the roller:
Fill
the roller tray half full. Roll the roller into the paint,
and then back and forth in the dry section to remove excess.
Paint a large "M" or "Z" (about 2 feet
square) onto the wall, and then fill it in with light, short
strokes. Repeat on an adjacent section, lightly lapping paint
from this latter into the first. Make very light finish strokes
in one direction only.
